Flatshare
Split the bills of a flatshare without spending your evenings on it
Rent divides itself. The rest does not: the groceries one of you paid for, the broadband in someone else's name, the emergency plumber, the three bags of coffee. Two months in, nobody knows where they stand any more, and nobody dares ask.
What actually goes wrong in a flatshare
It is almost never the amount, it is having to ask for it. Reminding someone you share a bathroom with that they owe you eighteen euros costs more than the eighteen euros, so you let it go. Once, twice, and one flatmate quietly ends up funding the others.
The spreadsheet lasts three weeks. Someone has to keep it up to date, the others have to open it, and no formula must break. The weekend the person who built it goes away, nothing gets recorded, and a month of receipts has to be reconstructed from memory.
Expenses do not always concern everyone, and that is where it gets complicated. Rent splits four ways, but the back bedroom is smaller. Groceries split three ways, because the fourth eats out. An equal split everywhere is a wrong split almost everywhere.
How it works in Kotisso
Kotisso is a group ledger: everyone records what they paid, the app keeps the balances, and nobody has to play the enforcer. It never moves money and asks for no bank account.

1
Create the group, invite your flatmates
A group called "Flat", a link or a six-character code sent in the chat you already use. Everyone signs up in thirty seconds. There is nothing to install: the app opens in a browser, and sits on a phone's home screen if you want it to.

2
Record expenses as they happen
Standing in the supermarket queue, in ten seconds: an amount, a category, who paid. A photo of the receipt can go with it. That is the only habit to build, and it decides everything: an expense recorded the same evening is an expense nobody will ever argue about.

Split the way life actually is
Four ways to split, chosen expense by expense: equally, by shares (two shares for the big bedroom, one for the small), by percentage, or by exact amounts. Rent can be set once and come back on its own every month, without anyone thinking about it.

Settle in two transfers, not twelve
At any moment everyone sees what they owe or are owed, and Kotisso proposes the shortest path back to zero: at worst one transfer fewer than there are flatmates. You pay each other however you like, and record it.
What the free version covers
Everything to do with the accounts is free, and will stay free. A flatshare needs nothing else:
- unlimited expenses, flatmates and settlements;
- all four split modes, including unequal shares and exact amounts;
- expenses that repeat every week or every month (rent, broadband, insurance);
- photos of receipts, and exporting the statement as a spreadsheet or a PDF;
- live balances for everyone, and the shortest reimbursement plan.
Premium only adds comfort: more than two groups open at once, history beyond twelve months, statistics and a profile photo. The numbers themselves are the same for everyone. See the pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to connect a bank account?
No, and there are no plans to. Kotisso keeps the books, it does not touch the money: you settle between yourselves by transfer, in cash or through a payment app, exactly as you already did.
What happens when a flatmate moves out?
They leave the group once their balance is zero, and not before: otherwise money would vanish from everyone else's accounts. The expenses they paid for stay in the group's history, which remains readable.
What if we forget to record anything for two weeks?
Nothing is lost: an expense can be entered with its own date, after the fact. That is also what the receipt photo is for, letting you catch up without relying on memory.
Open the group tonight
Three minutes to create it and invite the others. The first expense recorded is the one that will cost someone the least.
