Is Splitwise free? The free version's limit, what Pro adds, and the alternatives
Yes, Splitwise has a free version. But according to its publisher, it lets you add no more than 4 expenses a day, and the limit bites exactly when you need the app most: on the first day of a trip.

Yes: you can use Splitwise for free, with no subscription. But the free version has a limit that the paid version does not. According to the publisher's help centre, free users can add no more than 4 expenses a day. To add more, and to remove the ads, there is the Splitwise Pro subscription, billed monthly or yearly. We do not quote the price here: you will find it, up to date, on the Splitwise Pro page.
The figure of 4 is the one the publisher gave on 24 September 2026. Other sites quote different numbers, and the publisher can change it without notice: before you leave, it is worth checking it there again.
Is Splitwise free? What the free version lets you do and where the limit kicks in
Without paying, Splitwise already does a lot. According to its Google Play listing, the free version lets you:
- create groups and one-to-one balances, on Android, iOS and in the browser;
- record expenses in any currency, even offline;
- split equally, by percentages, by shares or by exact amounts;
- create recurring expenses, for example weekly, monthly or yearly;
- export your expenses to CSV.
The limit, on the other hand, concerns the number of expenses. The help centre puts it this way: “free users can add up to 4 expenses each day”, in other words, each free user can add up to four expenses per day. The limit applies per user: if everyone in a group of four enters their own expenses, the allowance is multiplied. But in almost every group, one person ends up keeping the accounts.
And that is where you feel it. In a shared flat, four expenses a day are almost always enough. On a trip, they are not: on the first day, between accommodation, groceries, fuel and a restaurant, you can hit the limit before dinner. And people usually find out at their destination, not before they set off.
What Splitwise Pro adds, and the Trip Pass
According to the official pages, the Pro subscription adds:
- unlimited expenses and no ads;
- currency conversion: only Pro users can convert, but every member of the group sees the converted expenses;
- receipt scanning, with item-by-item splitting;
- search across your whole history and charts by category;
- a default split for the group, so you do not have to set it again for every expense;
- transaction import from a card, only in some countries (the Pro page currently lists the United States).
There are three plans: monthly, individual yearly and Duo yearly, for two people. Both yearly plans include a Trip Pass: a pass you apply to a travel group of your choice, which gives Pro features to every member of that group for 30 days. It is the publisher's answer to exactly the travel scenario: as long as one person in the group has a yearly subscription, nobody runs into the limit for a month.

What Kotisso does not do
Kotisso is the app we publish, and it does not do everything Splitwise does. Before comparing, here are its limits:
- you need an account to take part, as on Splitwise;
- no iOS app: Kotisso is on Android via Google Play, and it opens in the browser;
- no offline entry: the app opens without a connection so you can reread the figures, but recording an expense requires a connection;
- no receipt scanning: you can attach a photo of a receipt, but nothing reads it for you;
- no default split for the group: the way to split belongs to each expense, and a recurring expense repeats it;
- no connection to any bank: no transaction import, no payments between members. It does the maths, and the transfers happen elsewhere.
Our free plan has a limit too, but not the same one. Kotisso never limits the number of expenses: the limit concerns the number of groups open at the same time, which is two. Someone with five Splitwise groups active at once would run into a limit with us as well, and it is only fair to say so.
Everything else in the tally is free: the four ways to split (Equal shares, By shares, Exact amounts, Percentages), currency conversion with the rate locked in when the expense is entered, receipt photos and exporting the tally to a spreadsheet and to PDF. The paid plan, at €2.99 a month or €24.99 a year, only adds conveniences that do not touch the numbers: more than two groups open at the same time, history visible beyond twelve months, group statistics and a profile photo. Balances are always calculated over the full history, for everyone. And a group becomes paid as soon as one of its members is.
Which app for which situation
A shared flat that lasts for years, with reminders and a long history: Splitwise remains the most complete option for this use, and four expenses a day are usually enough.
Nobody in the group wants to create an account. Go with Tricount: neither Splitwise nor Kotisso allows this. It is free and has no expense limit, as we explain in Is Tricount free or paid?.
You will often be without a connection, hiking or abroad without mobile data. Tricount, or Splitwise: both record expenses offline.
A group trip, with lots of expenses in the first few days, and nobody wants to pay for a subscription. Tricount or Kotisso, which do not count expenses. If someone already has Splitwise Pro yearly, the Trip Pass solves the problem for thirty days.
The tally will have to leave the group: the end of a flatshare, an arrangement between separated parents, a reimbursement you need to justify. Splitwise exports to CSV; Kotisso exports for free both to a spreadsheet and to PDF.
